Since studies suggest that inpatient perception on quality care may differ from patient to patient, researcher identified the need for patient’s perception on quality care. The number of such studies in Indian settings are very less, when compared to western countries. The objectives of the study were to assess the inpatient perception on quality nursing care and to find the association between inpatient perception and baseline variables. The methodology used in study was quantitative descriptive cross sectional survey design. The study was done among inpatients of a selected hospital from Pathanamthitta district, Kerala. Pilot study was conducted; the study design and tool were found to be feasible. Non probability purposive sampling technique, 100 inpatients were enrolled in the study. Standardized patient satisfaction with nursing care quality questionnaire, with reliability of 0.97 was used to collect data. The analysis of baseline variables showed that 47% were from middle adulthood (36-64 years), 58% were males and 74% were married. 31% of the inpatients were having high school certificate, 25% earning a monthly income of 15536-20714/- and 70% were unemployed. 43% of them were in the upper lower category of socio economic status, 59% were Christians and 89% were residing in the rural area. 73% were admitted in the medical department; 31% were having medical insurance. 57% were previously hospitalized, 50% perceived nursing care as good. The overall perception of nursing care shows 46% as excellent with a median value of 87 and no one reported it as poor. Chi-square analysis showed that there was a highly significant association between inpatient perceptions of quality nursing care and selected baseline variables such as socioeconomic status (X2=56.538 and p=0.000) which considers education, monthly income, occupational status and previous perception of nursing care (X2=32.903 and p=0.000). The item wise analysis and point bi-serial analysis of the tool shows ratings of poor quality for the items such as clarity of discharge information and involving family or friends in patient care. The study results concluded that the health care system has to adhere to new regimens with the intention of improving the communication between the health care professionals and the patients in their own mother tongue whenever possible....
